Princess, in detail

  1. The best value per carat

    A princess cut is sawn from the rough with very little waste, so you pay noticeably less per carat than for a round of comparable colour and clarity.

  2. The corners need covering

    Four sharp ninety-degree corners are the weak points of the shape. They should sit inside prongs rather than being left exposed, and a chipped corner is the most common damage we see on older princess rings.

  3. It faces up smaller than a round

    A princess carries more of its weight in depth, so it looks slightly smaller than a round of identical carat. Compare the millimetre measurements rather than the carat weight.
