Start from what he already wears

Men who wear no jewellery at all rarely start with a statement piece. Something close to what is already on him — a band, a simple chain — is far more likely to be worn than something that asks him to change habits.

Weight and finish do the work

Without a centre stone to look at, a men's piece is judged on its substance and its finish. A slightly heavier band with a clean brushed or polished surface reads as considered where a thin one reads as an afterthought.

Consider a diamond he would not buy himself

A single small stone set flush into a band is the usual bridge between no jewellery and some. It survives daily wear, catches light without announcing itself, and is the piece most often kept for decades.

A plain or single-stone band, or a simple chain. Both are easy to wear every day, neither requires him to change how he dresses, and both work with the watch he already owns.

Take a ring he already wears on the same finger and measure the inside diameter, or trace the inside circle. Men's fingers change size more with temperature and activity than women's, so a slightly looser fit is safer.

White gold and platinum hold up best against knocks and keep their colour with minimal care. Yellow and rose gold are softer and will show fine surface marks sooner, though those can be polished out.
