    A solitaire pendant is seen from much nearer than a ring ever is, and against skin rather than against the hand. Cut quality and the cleanliness of the setting carry the whole piece.

  2. The bail decides how it hangs

    A fixed bail holds the stone facing forward. A sliding bail lets the pendant find its own position and can tip, which matters more with a shape like a pear than with a round.

  3. Smaller than you expect, and that is fine

    A pendant sits in open space with nothing to give it scale, so it reads smaller than the same stone in a ring. Half to one carat is the usual everyday range.
