  1. Past, present and future

    The three stones are traditionally read as where you have been, where you are and where you are going, which is why the style is as popular for anniversaries as for engagements.

  2. Proportion is the whole design

    Side stones at roughly half to two thirds of the centre stone read as deliberate. Much smaller and they look like an afterthought; much larger and the centre stone stops being the centre.

  3. It wears wider than it looks

    Three stones across the finger make a broad head. Check it against the neighbouring finger before committing, particularly with tapered baguettes, which extend further than a round side stone.
