Pear, in detail

  1. Symmetry is the whole game

    A pear stands or falls on whether the point lines up with the centre of the rounded end, and whether the two shoulders mirror each other. Once you have seen an off-centre pear you cannot unsee it, and no setting will correct it.

  2. The point needs protecting

    The tip is the most vulnerable part of the stone. A V-prong over that point is structural, not decorative, and is worth insisting on.

  3. It shows a bow tie too

    Like the oval, a pear can carry a dark band across its centre. Check it in motion before committing.
