It wears larger than its weight
An oval spreads its surface along the finger, so it faces up bigger than a round of the same carat, commonly by around ten percent. It is one of the most efficient ways to buy visible size.

Watch for the bow tie
Every oval carries a darker bow-tie shape across its centre. A faint one is normal and disappears in movement. A heavy black one does not, and it is the first thing to look for in a video rather than a still photograph.

Length to width is a personal choice
Most ovals sit between 1.35 and 1.45. Narrower reads more elongating on the finger, wider reads softer and rounder. Ask for the exact ratio rather than judging from a photo, which can be cropped.
