Start from what he already wears
Men who wear no jewellery at all rarely start with a statement piece. Something close to what is already on him — a band, a simple chain — is far more likely to be worn than something that asks him to change habits.
Weight and finish do the work
Without a centre stone to look at, a men's piece is judged on its substance and its finish. A slightly heavier band with a clean brushed or polished surface reads as considered where a thin one reads as an afterthought.
Consider a diamond he would not buy himself
