Choose in three decisions

There is no single best diamond shape. Start with the kind of light pattern you enjoy, then choose the outline and face-up size you want, and finally decide how much point or corner protection your setting needs. Keep no more than two shapes on your shortlist, then compare the exact stones by millimetres, grading report, and video in more than one lighting condition.

Shape and cut are not the same decision

Shape

The outline you see from above: round, oval, pear, emerald, cushion, and so on.

Cut style

How the facets are arranged and how the stone handles light. Retail language often uses “cut” for both ideas.

The distinction matters most with fancy shapes. Under current GIA guidance, an overall GIA cut grade applies to standard round brilliant diamonds, not to fancy shapes. A fancy-shape GIA report still provides measurements, polish, symmetry, and other useful information. IGI uses a fancy-shape cut-grading method, but that grade still cannot tell you whether you personally like the stone’s face-up pattern.

Practical rule: use a report to verify identity, measurements, finish, and recorded characteristics. Use comparable photos or video to judge the exact fancy-shaped stone’s pattern, contrast, and outline.

Build your shortlist before comparing ten shapes

Decision 1

Choose the light pattern

Brilliant-style facets produce many smaller flashes and a busier pattern. Step cuts show broader flashes and stronger geometric contrast. Modified patterns can sit between those two experiences.

Decision 2

Choose the outline and footprint

Carat is weight, not visible area. Compare the exact stone’s length and width in millimetres. An elongated outline can cover the finger differently, but it is not automatically larger or better value.

Decision 3

Choose the protection tolerance

Rounded outlines avoid exposed tips. Cropped corners reduce sharpness. Pear, marquise, princess, and heart shapes need a direct conversation about protecting points or corners.

Brilliant-style

Lively, smaller flashes

Round, oval, pear, marquise, heart, and many cushions use brilliant-style or modified-brilliant faceting. Compare how bright and dark areas move, not just a still photograph.

Step cut

Broad, geometric flashes

Emerald and Asscher cuts use rows of step-like facets. Their open pattern makes symmetry and transparent areas easier to see, so the individual stone deserves close viewing.

Mixed or modified

Shape-specific character

Radiant, princess, and some cushion patterns combine geometric outlines with busy brilliance. The shape name does not reveal the exact facet pattern, so video matters.

This matrix is a shortlist tool, not a grading system. It combines three questions: what light pattern you want, what outline you want to see on the hand, and what protection or inspection issue deserves attention next.

Round

Pattern
Brilliant-style, with many small flashes and a symmetrical circular outline.
Face-up effect
Compact and balanced. Compare actual diameter rather than assuming carat tells you spread.
Inspect
GIA cut grade when applicable, plus polish, symmetry, measurements, and performance in motion.
Setting question
The rounded edge works with many setting styles. Choose based on profile, maintenance, and wedding-band fit.

Oval

Pattern
Brilliant-style flashes in an elongated, softly rounded outline.
Face-up effect
Lengthens the visual line across the finger. Compare millimetres and shoulder shape, not carat alone.
Inspect
Outline symmetry and how the central contrast changes as the stone turns. A visible bow tie is not automatically unacceptable.
Setting question
Choose north–south or east–west orientation, then check head width and band clearance.

Cushion

Pattern
Usually brilliant or modified-brilliant, with patterns ranging from defined flashes to a more splintered look.
Face-up effect
Soft square or rectangular outline. Check the actual length-to-width ratio and corner shape.
Inspect
The individual facet pattern, contrast, symmetry, and measured footprint.
Setting question
A halo can make the outline look broader; a solitaire keeps the cushion edge easier to read.

Pear

Pattern
Brilliant-style flashes in a teardrop outline with one pointed end.
Face-up effect
Elongated and directional. Check balanced shoulders, point alignment, and actual dimensions.
Inspect
Central contrast in motion, symmetry, the point, girdle condition, and inclusion placement near vulnerable areas.
Setting question
Ask how the point is protected. Protection lowers exposure but cannot make the diamond damage-proof.

Emerald

Pattern
Step-cut facets with broad, geometric flashes rather than a busy brilliant pattern.
Face-up effect
Rectangular, often elongated, with cropped corners and a strong outline.
Inspect
Centered pattern, symmetry, transparent areas, and any inclusions visible through the open facets.
Setting question
Decide how much metal should frame the cropped corners and whether the gallery will clear the wedding band.

Princess

Pattern
Brilliant-style or modified-brilliant faceting inside a crisp square outline.
Face-up effect
Geometric and compact. Compare square proportions and the measured width.
Inspect
Corner symmetry, face-up pattern, girdle details, and inclusions near corners.
Setting question
All four corners deserve protection. Ask how each prong or bezel meets the corner.

Radiant

Pattern
Modified-brilliant faceting with lively contrast inside a cropped-corner rectangle or square.
Face-up effect
Can look compact or elongated. The length-to-width ratio describes preference, not quality.
Inspect
Outline, facet pattern, central contrast, symmetry, and actual dimensions.
Setting question
Cropped corners give settings more surface than sharp points, but prong position and gallery height still matter.

Marquise

Pattern
Brilliant-style flashes in a long outline with a point at each end.
Face-up effect
Strong finger coverage and a directional silhouette. Compare the actual length, width, and symmetry.
Inspect
Matching points, outline symmetry, central contrast in motion, and girdle/inclusion details near both tips.
Setting question
Both points need protection, and the long outline makes head alignment especially visible.

Asscher

Pattern
Step-cut facets in a square outline with cropped corners and strong concentric geometry.
Face-up effect
Compact, architectural, and often deeper-looking than an elongated emerald outline.
Inspect
Centered steps, symmetry, transparent areas, inclusions visible through open facets, and measured spread.
Setting question
Choose whether prongs should emphasize the cropped corners or let the outline appear more open.

Heart

Pattern
Usually brilliant-style, with the outline carrying much of the design meaning.
Face-up effect
Directional and symbolic. Compare cleft definition, matching lobes, and point alignment.
Inspect
Outline symmetry, central pattern, point condition, girdle details, and whether the heart remains legible at the chosen size.
Setting question
Protect the point without hiding the cleft or changing the outline you chose.

What the grading report can—and cannot—decide

GIA report

Use the fields that are actually present

For a standard round brilliant, review the overall cut grade alongside measurements, polish, symmetry, and other report details. For a fancy shape, current GIA reports do not provide the same overall cut grade, so the visual review carries more weight.

IGI report

A fancy-shape grade is evidence, not a verdict

IGI may provide a fancy-shape cut grade using shape-specific criteria. It can help narrow the field, but it cannot tell you whether you prefer the exact stone’s bow tie, windowing, contrast pattern, or outline.

A report cannot replace seeing a fancy shape face up. GIA’s observations of oval, pear, and marquise diamonds found that prominent windowing was consistently disliked, while reactions to bow ties and crushed-ice patterns varied more. That is a useful boundary: do not reject every bow tie by name, and do not ignore a broad, dark pattern that stays fixed as the stone moves.

How to inspect the exact diamond online

  1. Compare millimetres, not only carat. Record the length and width from the grading report or product record. Use Driona’s carat-size-on-finger guide as orientation, then judge the exact stone.
  2. Ask for a face-up video in motion. Watch how bright and dark areas move. For oval, pear, and marquise shapes, note the width, darkness, and persistence of any central bow tie.
  3. Keep the lighting comparable. A stone shown only under intense jewellery lighting is hard to compare. Ask for ordinary diffuse light as well when the seller can provide it.
  4. Check the outline. Look for balanced shoulders, aligned points, even corners, a centered heart cleft, or centered step patterns as relevant to the shape.
  5. Read the girdle and inclusion details. Points, corners, very thin areas, and inclusions near vulnerable edges deserve extra attention. GIA’s chipping guidance explains why sharp points and thin girdle areas need care.
  6. Compare like with like. Use similar camera angles, distances, and lighting. A larger video frame can make one stone look more impressive without changing its dimensions.

Let the shape change the setting conversation

A setting can protect a point or corner, reveal more of the outline, and change how high the stone sits. GIA notes that pointed shapes and very thin girdle areas are more vulnerable to chipping. V-prongs, bezels, and partial bezels can reduce exposure, but no setting makes a diamond damage-proof.

Shape alone also cannot tell you whether a wedding band will sit flush. Head height, gallery width, prongs, side stones, and the actual contact points between the rings decide that. Leave with two shapes, not ten. Write down your preferred light pattern, outline, and protection tolerance. If two shapes still fit, compare their exact millimetres and videos side by side before looking at more options.

Which diamond shape sparkles the most?

A well-cut round brilliant is designed for a balanced brilliant-style light return, but “more sparkle” is not the only useful comparison. Fancy brilliant shapes can look lively in a different pattern, and step cuts favor broad flashes over a busy pattern. Compare the type of light movement you prefer, then inspect the exact stone.

Which diamond shape looks largest for its carat weight?

Elongated shapes can cover the finger differently from a round of the same weight, but there is no safe universal percentage. Carat measures weight. Compare the exact length and width in millimetres, along with proportions and face-up pattern.

Do fancy-shaped diamonds have cut grades?

The answer depends on the laboratory. Under current GIA guidance, the overall GIA cut grade applies to standard round brilliant diamonds, not fancy shapes. IGI may provide fancy-shape cut grades. In both cases, inspect the individual fancy shape rather than treating one grade as the whole decision.

Is a bow tie in an oval, pear, or marquise always bad?

What is the best length-to-width ratio?

There is no universal best ratio. Length-to-width ratio describes the outline you prefer. Use it to communicate “shorter and fuller” or “longer and slimmer,” then judge symmetry, pattern, dimensions, and setting fit on the exact stone.
