What to verify before you pay
- Open the report on the issuing laboratory’s official website. Do not rely only on a seller-provided PDF or screenshot.
- Match the report number, shape, carat weight and measurements to the listing and the exact stone.
- Read the report type and date before interpreting its grades. GIA changed its lab-grown diamond service on October 1, 2025.
- Treat the report as one part of the purchase check. It does not prove seller fulfilment, visual beauty, setting quality, price fairness or return terms.
A grading report is useful only when it connects to the diamond you are actually buying. The strongest check joins three records: the laboratory archive, the physical stone and the seller’s written offer.
A genuine report can still be paired with the wrong listing or misunderstood as a guarantee. The sequence below keeps those separate problems from being collapsed into one reassuring-looking document.
First, make three records agree
Do this while the official lookup, listing and seller details are open together. A mismatch is easier to resolve before payment than during a return.
Does the number exist?
Retrieve the report directly from the issuing laboratory and note the date, report type, origin, shape, weight and measurements.
Can the stone be matched?
Compare the physical details and, when present, ask to see the girdle inscription under magnification.
Does the paperwork agree?
Check the listing and invoice for the same report number, stone details, metal, setting, size and purchase terms.
The six-step VERIFY check
VERIFY is a purchase sequence, not a new grading standard. It keeps authentication, interpretation and seller checks in the right order.

1. Authenticate the report and the stone
The first two VERIFY steps answer different questions. The lookup tests whether the archived report exists. Matching tests whether that report belongs with the stone being offered.
Start at the official domain

2. Read the report in the right context
The next two steps are interpretation. Start with the report type and date, then read the fields as a group instead of choosing one headline grade.
Describes the submitted stone
Its fields depend on the laboratory, service, stone and issue date.
States a value for a purpose
Often prepared for insurance. It is not a substitute for grading and is not automatically the fair retail price.
Describe the transaction
The invoice, warranty, return terms and setting specifications come from the seller.
Real example: read an IGI report with me
This is an official IGI electronic report dated January 28, 2026. It is used here only as an educational example and is not a Driona product or customer document. Many shoppers call this a certificate, but the document itself is titled Laboratory Grown Diamond Report.
Confirm the report’s identity
The issuer is IGI, the date is January 28, 2026, and the number is LG769633894. Enter that number on IGI’s own verification site. A seller’s PDF should match the official record.
Confirm it says laboratory-grown
The description clearly reads Laboratory Grown Diamond. Do not infer origin from appearance, price or a seller’s headline. Read the laboratory’s identification field.
Match shape, weight and measurements
This example describes a round brilliant weighing 1.05 carat and measuring 6.53–6.57 × 3.95 mm. These values should agree with the listing, invoice and exact loose stone.
Translate the grades without overpromising
The report gives F color, SI1 clarity and Excellent cut. It also records Excellent polish, Excellent symmetry and no fluorescence. SI1 does not promise that every buyer will find the diamond eye-clean, and an Excellent cut grade does not replace seeing the stone.
Read proportions and the clarity plot
The diagram records table, total depth, crown angle, pavilion angle, girdle and culet. The clarity plot maps graded characteristics. Use these as comparison data, then inspect the actual diamond in neutral light.
Do not skip comments and inscription
The comments say the diamond was grown by HPHT and that IGI found no indication of post-growth treatment. The inscription field repeats LG769633894. The small inscription photograph is labelled “Sample Image Used,” so it is not a substitute for checking the inscription on the offered stone.
Start with origin, type and date
Confirm that the official record identifies the stone as laboratory-grown. Then use the report title and issue date to understand which fields and terminology apply.
Read the fields together
Compare measurements, carat weight, assessment fields, finish, fluorescence, proportions and comments. Carat is weight; use measurements when you compare face-up size.
3. Decide whether the whole offer holds up
The final two VERIFY steps cover the questions a laboratory report was not designed to answer.
- An archived laboratory record exists.
- The submitted stone received the listed assessment.
- You have identifiers to compare with the listing and stone.
- The seller will fulfil with that exact stone.
- You will like its face-up appearance.
- The price, setting quality and policies suit you.
List what the report omits
Ask for neutral-light video, setting specifications, return conditions, resize terms, warranty details and written confirmation of the exact stone. A matching report cannot resolve transparency, bow-tie, windowing or workmanship concerns. If a stone looks hazy, review what may affect its appearance.
Make the invoice complete the story
The final invoice should name the report number, stone, metal, setting, ring size and seller terms. Keep the report, invoice, listing screenshots and correspondence together, then recheck the stone while the return window is open.
Stop
No official record, conflicting number, origin mismatch, unexplained measurement difference or pressure to pay before checking.
Clarify
Older format, absent field, unclear treatment wording, stock imagery or an inscription that has not yet been shown.
Continue
The official record, stone identifiers, seller description, appearance review and purchase terms form one consistent story.
Questions buyers still ask
Can a grading-report PDF be fake?
A fabricated or altered PDF is possible. Use the issuing laboratory’s lookup, then match that record to the listing and physical stone.
Is a GIA or IGI report number enough?
No. The number retrieves the record. You still need to compare its shape, weight, measurements, origin and inscription information with the offer.
Does every lab-grown diamond have an inscription?
Do not assume so. Inscription practices depend on the laboratory service and stone. Check the report, then ask the seller how the physical diamond will be matched.
Should I reject an older GIA report?
Not merely because it uses a previous format. Verify it through GIA, note its date and service, and investigate actual inconsistencies.
Can the report tell me whether the price is fair?
