Choose a lab-grown diamond if owning a diamond, getting a more traditionally diamond-like balance of white light and fire, and having diamond-specific documentation matter enough to justify the higher total price. They can look similar, but they are different materials

A lab-grown diamond is a diamond created in a laboratory. GIA explains that it has essentially the same chemical, physical, and optical properties as a natural diamond, although its origin can be identified with appropriate laboratory testing and equipment. If your question is about mined origin rather than moissanite, compare natural and lab-grown diamonds separately.

Moissanite is silicon carbide. It is a separate gemstone, not a type of diamond. Gemologists may describe it as a diamond simulant because it can imitate aspects of a diamond's appearance. That term identifies a material relationship. It is not a judgment that moissanite is low quality or “fake.” GIA makes the same distinction between lab-grown diamonds and diamond simulants.

The identity test is simple: if the word diamond itself carries emotional or symbolic importance, choose a diamond. If you mainly want a durable near-colorless gemstone with a different optical character, moissanite deserves to be considered on its own terms.

The visual difference is mostly about the character of the light

“Which sparkles more?” is too blunt a question. White-light return is often called brilliance. Colored flashes are called fire. Scintillation is the pattern of flashes and dark areas you see as the stone, light, or viewer moves. Cut, stone size, viewing distance, and lighting affect all three.

GIA's published moissanite data records higher dispersion and double refraction in synthetic moissanite. In practical viewing, that can produce more obvious spectral color and sometimes a doubled look to facet junctions. A diamond has a different balance of white light, fire, and scintillation. Neither pattern is objectively prettier.

For a useful comparison, ask for stones with similar face-up dimensions and broadly comparable cut quality. Look at them under neutral daylight, warm household lighting, and a normal room light. Jewellery-store spotlights can make both stones look more dramatic than they will during most of your day.

Daily wear is not decided by one hardness number

GIA lists diamond at 10 on the Mohs scale, while its research on synthetic moissanite reports a Mohs hardness of about 9.25. Both figures concern scratch resistance. They do not tell you everything about chipping, a vulnerable stone edge, a bent prong, or a worn metal band.

Scratches

Diamond has the higher Mohs hardness. Moissanite is also highly scratch resistant, but the scale is not a full durability ranking.

Impact

A hard blow can still damage a stone or its setting. Pointed shapes and exposed edges need thoughtful protection.

Setting

Prongs, bezel coverage, profile height, craftsmanship, and the wearer's routine can matter more than a small hardness difference.

Care

Oils and residue reduce sparkle. Metal scratches and prongs loosen, so cleaning and periodic inspection still matter.

Both materials can be practical for an engagement ring. A low, protective setting may be a better daily-wear choice than a high-profile design, regardless of which stone you choose.

The useful price comparison is the complete ring

A headline such as “moissanite costs X% less” leaves out the setting. Metal purity, accent stones, craftsmanship, and design can make up a large part of the final price. That is why the percentage difference can change even when the stone-option difference stays almost fixed.

The result: in this one Driona ring, the lab-grown diamond option adds about $525.90 across the listed metals. Yet moissanite's percentage saving falls from 57.4% in silver to 32.7% in 18K because the more expensive metal raises the complete-ring price.

A report can help confirm what the stone is and describe the information assessed by that laboratory. It does not make every report format equivalent, and it does not replace the seller's written product details or return policy.

GIA

Since October 1, 2025, GIA's eligible colorless-to-near-colorless lab-grown diamond service uses an overall Premium or Standard quality assessment instead of the nomenclature it created for natural diamonds.

IGI

IGI uses its own lab-grown diamond reporting format. For finished jewellery, it can describe the article and provide center-stone measurements and 4Cs assessments as the mounting permits.

Moissanite

Ask what documentation the seller supplies and what it verifies. A moissanite seller document is not a diamond grading report, so compare the stated material, dimensions, treatments, and return terms directly.

The FTC advises sellers to disclose laboratory-grown origin clearly near the word “diamond”. It also warns that a basic thermal tester may register moissanite as diamond. A tester result by itself is not enough to identify every stone.

Choose by the priority you will notice after the proposal

  • Diamond identityStart with a lab-grown diamond. Verify the laboratory, report number, report scope, inscription, and any treatment information.
  • Rainbow fire and budgetStart with moissanite. View it in ordinary light and compare actual millimetre dimensions, not only a carat-equivalent label.

  3. Size: What are the actual millimetre dimensions as well as the stated carat or equivalent?
  4. Documentation: Which laboratory or seller document is supplied, and what does it cover?
  5. Construction: What metal, profile, prong or bezel design, and accent-stone arrangement are you buying?
  6. Care: What cleaning, inspection, and maintenance does the ring need?
  7. Transaction: Get resizing, warranty, return, exchange, and any treatment disclosures in writing. The FTC's consumer guidance specifically recommends written origin, size or weight, treatment, care, and return information.

Does moissanite get cloudy?

Moissanite does not normally become permanently cloudy simply through ordinary wear. Oils, soap, lotion, residue, or surface film can make it look hazy until it is cleaned. The setting can also trap dirt beneath the stone. That is different from a change in the gemstone itself. The same distinction helps explain why a stone can look hazy.

Can a diamond tester confuse moissanite with diamond?

Yes. The FTC notes that some thermal testers may register moissanite as diamond because of its thermal properties. Identification should not rely on a basic thermal reading alone.

Which looks more like a mined diamond?

A lab-grown diamond, because it is diamond and has essentially the same optical properties as a natural diamond. Moissanite can look diamond-like, but its stronger spectral fire and double refraction can make the difference noticeable.

Is one better for daily wear?

Both can suit daily wear. The more useful comparison includes stone shape, exposed edges, setting height, prongs or bezel, metal, maintenance, and your routine. Mohs hardness alone cannot decide this.
