  1. One stone, nowhere to hide

    A solitaire puts the whole ring on the centre stone, so cut quality matters more here than in any other setting. There is no surrounding sparkle to carry a dull stone.

  2. The setting decides how big it looks

    A raised, slim four-prong head lets light in from the sides and makes the same carat weight read larger than a heavy six-prong basket sitting low against the finger.

  3. It has to survive being worn

    This is usually the ring somebody wears every day for decades. A slightly lower profile and a rounded band catch far less on clothing and hair than a tall cathedral setting.
