A ring of small stones around the centre makes the whole head read noticeably larger than the centre stone alone — often by half a carat or more to the eye, for a fraction of the cost.

It also protects the stone
The halo sits slightly proud of the centre stone's girdle, so knocks land on the surrounding metal and melee rather than on the edge of the main stone. It suits softer shapes with exposed points.

The one thing that ages a halo badly is a visible gap between the centre stone and the halo. Well made settings close that line so the two read as one continuous surface.
